The container ship type Elbewerft EWB 500 was built in a series of five units.

details

The EWB 500 series of the Boizenburger Elbe shipyard was built between 1996 and 1998 for various German shipping companies. The shipyard had to file for bankruptcy in 1997 and ceased operations in 1998. The foreships of the units were delivered from Turkey, the aft ships were built in Boizenburg. The Uwe Kahrs , the Katharina B and the Merino were built in 1997 at the equipment quay of the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven. The last two ships of the EWB-500 series were completed by the Sietas shipyard in Hamburg and designated there as type 159.

The ships are designed as multi-purpose dry cargo ships. They are mainly used in container transport. The capacity is 523 TEU. Transporting up to 418 TEU is possible with a homogeneous load with 14-tonne 20-foot containers.

The ships are powered by a MaK four-stroke diesel engine of the type 9 M32 with an output of 3960 kW. The motor drives a shaft generator and the controllable pitch propeller and enables a speed of 16.5 knots. There are also two auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator available. The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster .
