Earl Nugent
Earl Nugent was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .
The title was on July 21, 1776 by King George III. awarded to Robert Craggs-Nugent, 1st Viscount Clare . He had already been awarded the titles Viscount Clare and Baron Nugent , of Carlanstown in the County of Westmeath, in the Peerage of Ireland on January 19, 1767 .
Since his only legitimate son Edmund Nugent had died childless in 1771, he was given the title of Earl with the special addition that, in the absence of male descendants, he also passed on to the husband of his daughter Mary Elizabeth Nugent, George Temple-Grenville, 1st Marquess of Buckingham , is inheritable. Accordingly, he inherited him on his death on October 13, 1788 as 2nd Earl Nugent, while the other two titles expired. The Marquess then added his family name to Nugent-Temple-Grenville . He already held the British titles of 1st Marquess of Buckingham , 3rd Earl Temple , 4th Viscount Cobham and 4th Baron Cobham .
His son, the 2nd Marquess, became the general heir to his father-in-law James Brydges, 3rd Duke of Chandos († 1789) and therefore added his family name to Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville in 1799 , a rarity even among British nobles. In 1822 he was elevated to Duke of Buckingham and Chandos , Marquess of Chandos and Earl Temple of Stowe in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
His grandson, the 3rd Duke, was also confirmed the Scottish title 10th Lord Kinloss in 1868 . When he died on March 26, 1889 without male descendants, the Earldom Nugent, the Dukedom and his other titles with the exception of the titles Earl Temple of Stowe , Viscount Cobham , Baron Cobham and Lord Kinloss , which fell in female succession to various distant relatives .
