Awards and history of the title

The title was first created on June 7, 1647 for James Hamilton, 2nd Viscount Claneboye . With the death of his only son, the 2nd Earl , in 1675, both titles expired.

On November 24, 1756, the Earl title was created in the second bestowal for the former House of Commons James Hamilton, 1st Viscount Limerick . He had already been raised to Baron Claneboye , in the County of Down, and Viscount of the City of Limerick on May 13, 1719 in the Peerage of Ireland . He was the great-great-grandson of William Hamilton, the brother of the first Viscount Claneboye. After the death of his son, the 2nd Earl , in 1798, the three titles lapsed.
