Awards

First award (1559)

For the first time on January 13, 1559, the title Baron Hunsdon was created in the Peerage of England for the former member of the House of Commons Henry Carey . He was a cousin of Queen Elizabeth I and was Lord Chamberlain from 1585 to 1596 . Along with the title, he was given ownership of the Hunsdon House estate in Hundson , Hertfordshire .

His grandson, the 4th Baron, was made Viscount Rochford in 1621 and Earl of Dover , in the County of Kent , in 1628 . Both titles belonged to the Peerage of England. When he died, his son followed him as 2nd Earl, who had already inherited the title of 5th Baron Hunsdon prematurely on November 27, 1640 through Writ of Acceleration . When he died, the Earldom and the Viscountcy became extinct. The barony passed to his second uncle as the 6th baron.

With the death of the 8th baron in 1765, the baron title expired.

Second award (1832)

In the second bestowal on May 15, 1832 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, the title Baron Hunsdon , of Scutterskelfe in the County of York , was created for Lucius Cary, 10th Viscount Falkland . This was a Whig politician and governor of various colonies in the British Empire and already held the title Viscount Falkland , created in 1620 in the Peerage of Scotland . In contrast to this Scottish title, the barony was associated with a hereditary seat in the House of Lords . When he died on March 12, 1884 without a male heir, the barony became extinct.

Third award (1923)

In the third award, the title Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon , of Briggens in the County of Hertford , was created for the businessman Herbert Gibbs on July 24, 1923 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . He was the fourth son of Henry Gibbs, 1st Baron Aldenham, and in 1908 had acquired Hunsdon House , the historic ancestral home of the first Barons, and the Briggens Estate in Hertfordshire.

His son, the 2nd Baron, inherited the title of 4th Baron Aldenham from his cousin in 1939 . Since then, the baronies of Aldenham and Hunsdon have been united.
