Earl of Middleton was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

Award

The title was created on October 1, 1660 for the military John Middleton . Together with the Earldom he was awarded the subordinate title of Lord Clermont and Fettercairn . The titles were awarded with the special inheritance regulation that, in the absence of direct male descendants, they should also be transferable to other male heirs, insofar as they legitimately adopted the name and coat of arms of the Middleton family. In addition, the award was given the special addition that the titles should be considered to have been created in September 1656 with regard to the protocol ranking .

His son, the 2nd Earl, was stripped of his title on July 2, 1695 because of high treason by a parliamentary resolution, when he went into French exile to the dethroned King James II .
