Earl of Swinton
Earl of Swinton is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , named after Swinton Park Castle near Masham , North Yorkshire .
The castle, which was bought back by the Earl's family in 2000, is also the Earl's family seat. Previously this was the nearby Dykes Hill House .
Award
The title was bestowed on May 5, 1955, on the Conservative British politician Philip Cunliffe-Lister, 1st Viscount Swinton . From 1922 to 1955 he held various ministerial offices in a total of eleven governments. Among other things, he was trade and colonial minister.
Subordinate title
Along with the earliest dignity, he was given the subordinate title of Baron Masham , of Ellington in the County of York . As early as November 29, 1935 he had been awarded Viscount Swinton , of Masham in the County of York.
The eldest son of the respective earl carries the courtesy title of Lord Masham as a probable heir apparent .
