action

In 1889, Père Laloge was in dire financial straits with his goods business in Ste-Adèle, a small rural settlement in the province of Québec. He is the father of Donalda, who lost her mother at an early age. The young girl falls in love with the handsome Alexis Labranche, who is leaving to earn money so they can get married. Séraphin Poudrier, the cold-hearted mayor and at the same time coffin maker, knows how to shamelessly exploit the plight of his fellow men. He lends them money at high interest rates, takes advantage of them and brings them completely into poverty. He offers to help Père Laloge in exchange for Donalda's hand, even though he is much older than her. The girl refuses. Only when her father tries to hang himself because he can no longer see a way out does she necessarily consent and marry Séraphin. In his house they live very poorly and above all without human warmth. In winter there is hardly any heating and the food is very simple. Donalda is fulfilling her conjugal duties. But even though she tries, she cannot love her lustful husband. When Alexis returns from the woods in spring, she reveals to him that she is pregnant in order to make him understand the hopelessness of their relationship and sends him away. When she worked hard, she miscarried. She only realizes the extent of her husband's stinginess when she sees his accumulated wealth in the open attic room. He only loves his money and has no compassion for others. In the cold winter, Donalda starts to have a fever. She consciously seeks her death as it is the only honorable way out of her unhappy marriage. Alexis arrives just in time to say goodbye to her on her deathbed. Séraphin dies when a stranger sets his house on fire, although Alexis tries to save him.
