Baron Masham
Baron Masham is a hereditary British title of nobility which has been awarded three times. The first award took place in the Peerage of Great Britain , the two later in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
Awards
For the first time on January 1, 1712, the title of Baron Masham , of Otes, was bestowed on the courtier Samuel Masham . The title expired on June 14, 1776 with the death of the second baron.
The second time was on July 15, 1891, the title Baron Masham , of Swinton in the County of York , created for the industrialist Samuel Cunliffe Lister . With the death of the third baron, this title expired on January 4, 1924.
On May 5, 1955, the title of Baron Masham , of Ellington in the County of York, was given to the politician Philip Cunliffe-Lister, 1st Viscount Swinton , who was also elevated to Earl of Swinton . The respective Earl of Swinton leads the barony as a subordinate title, his title heir ( apparent heir ) leads the courtesy title of Lord Masham .
Other titles
The second earl's wife, Susan Cunliffe-Lister , was named a life peer in her own right in the Peerage of the United Kingdom on February 12, 1970 . She received the title of Baroness Masham of Ilton , of Masham in the North Riding of the County of York .
