Samuel Cunliffe Lister, 1st Baron Masham , (born January 1, 1815 in Calverley Hall near Bradford , † February 2, 1906 at Masham in Yorkshire ) was a British inventor and industrialist .

Life

Lister's father, Ellis Cunliffe (1774-1853), was the first MP to be elected in Bradford under the Reform Act 1832 .

Samuel Lister played a key role in the development of Bradford's wool processing industry during the Industrial Revolution . The textile industry transformed Bradford from a small, rural village into a rich and famous town. In addition to owning a spinning mill , he also occupied himself with other things, such as developing an air brake for railways. He was a passionate hunter and patron of the arts.

In 1838 he and his older brother John started a worsted spinning mill in Manningham that their father had built for them. Lister's mill and its owners were well known. She turned the Listers into multimillionaires and employers of thousands of people. The mill shaped the identity of the whole region, Lister became a symbol of the Victorian business community.

Lister invented the Lister roller comb , which separates and straightens raw wool , which must be done before spinning. It was a dirty, hot, and tiring process in the 19th century - Lister's invention was a fundamental relief.

Around 1855 he began looking for a way to reuse the fiber waste in silk making . After many years, he finally succeeded in developing a silk comb that made it possible to produce good quality silk at low cost. Another important invention Lister made in connection with silk making was his velvet loom , which made him very rich. Punitive tariffs introduced by the United States cut his income considerably, making him one of the first to criticize Britain's free trade policy .

In 1891 he was raised to the hereditary nobility , he chose his title after the village of Masham in Yorkshire , near which he had bought the Swinton Park estate in 1888. He died there in 1906.

A statue of Lister, created by Matthew Noble from white Sicilian marble, stands in Bradford's park named after him. It was unveiled in 1875 by W. E. Forster , then Bradford MP.
