Susan Cunliffe-Lister, Dowager Countess of Swinton, Baroness Masham of Ilton , DSG , DL (born April 14, 1935 in Lyth , County Caithness ) is a British politician and life peeress .

life and career

She was born Susan Lilian Primrose Sinclair, the daughter of Major Sir Ronald Sinclair, 8th Baronet. She attended Heathfield School at Ascot and the London Polytechnic . In 1959 she married David Cunliffe-Lister, 2nd Earl of Swinton , who became Earl of Swinton in 1972 . This made her the Countess of Swinton. Lord and Lady Swinton adopted two children. David Cunliffe-Lister died in 2006.

Lady Swinton is a prominent convert to the Roman Catholic Church and patron of the Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology . In 1959 she had a bicycle accident and was disabled. Since then she has been dependent on the use of a wheelchair and deals with issues related to disabilities.

Cunliffe-Lister volunteered as a social worker . From 1973 to 1985 she was a member of the Peterlee and Newton Aycliffe Corporation . From 1982 to 1990 she was a member of the Yorkshire Regional Health Authority . Until 1991 she was a member of the General Advisary Council of the BBC . Since 1991 she has been Deputy Lieutenant of North Yorkshire . From 1990 to 1996 she was a member of the North Yorkshire Family Health Service Authority . She was also a member of the Wetherby Young Offenders Institute's Board of Visitors from 1963 to 1994 . Since 2005 she has been Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire .

She was Chair of the Home Office's Committee on Young People Alcohol and Crime and Councilor of the London Lighthouse . Cunliffe-Lister was the director of the Association for the Prevention of Addiction . From 1963 to 1988 she was president of the North Yorkshire Red Cross and patron ( saint was) since 1989. From 1963 to 1998 she also president of the Yorkshire Association for Disabled and since 1982 at the Spinal Injuries Association . She also held this position for the Psoriasis Association , the Registration Council of Scientists in Health Care , the League of Friends of Harrogate Hospitals , the Institute of Welfare Officers and the St Cecilia Orchestra in Ripon . Cunliffe-Lister was vice president of the College of Occupational Therapists Action for Dysphasic and the Hospital Saving Association .

She was also the patron of the Disablement Income Group , Adults (DIA), and International Spinal Research Trust . She has also served as president, vice president, and patron of numerous other organizations .

Lady Swinton runs the Masham Riding Center in Masham , North Yorkshire .

Membership in the House of Lords

She was named a Life Peeress as Baroness Masham of Ilton, of Masham in the North Riding of the County of York in 1970. She is a crossbencher in the House of Lords. She and her husband were one of the few couples in which both partners held titles in their own right .

She is an active member of the House of Lords (as of May 2010), where she is known as the Baroness Masham of Ilton, although she has the higher title of Countess. She cites health policy , integration of people with disabilities, penitentiary and criminal law reforms , drug abuse , agriculture and horticulture as her political interests .

She belonged to several Lords Select Committees in the House of Lords . From 1997 to 1998 she was a member of the Science and Technology Sub-committee I ( Resistance to Anti-Microbial Agents ) and from 2005 to 2009 the special committee Administration and Works . She also belongs to numerous all-party groups . She has been Vice Chair of the AIDS Group and Chair of the Health Group since 2001. She has been Vice Chair of the Skin Group since 2001 . She has held this position with the Pro-Life Group since 2002 and with the Patient and Public Involvement in Health Group since 2005 . Since 2005 she has been secretary ( Secretary ) of the Patient Safety Group .

She's since 2005 Treasurer ( Treasurer ) of the Prison Health Group and the Headache Disorders Group . Since 2006 she has been Vice Chair of the Drugs Misuse Group , the Men's Health Group and the Obesity Group . Since 2007 she has been Vice Chair of the Accident Prevention Group and the Cancer Group .

Cunliffe-Lister is treasurer of Primary Care and Public Health Group since 2007 and the Spinal Cord Injury Group since 2008. She is secretary ( Secretary ) of the Chronic Pain Group since 2008. Since 2009, she occupied the same position for the Umbilical Cord Blood and Adult Stem Cells Group . She has been treasurer of the Continence Care Group since 2009 .

She was a member and vice-chair of the Parliamentary All-Party Disablement Groupp Drug Misuse Ctee . She was a member of the Parliamentary Groups Children , Alcohol Misuse , Breast Cancer , Food and Health , Skin and Epilepsy , Penal Affairs , Primary Care and Public Health .

Honors

She received in 1985 a Master of Arts Honorary ( Honorary Master of Arts ) of the University of York and the same year the Open University . In 1988, Cunliffe-Lister Honorable Fellow of Bradford & Ilkley Community College and received an honorary doctorate in law ( Honorary Doctorate of Law ) of the University of Leeds . She became a Freeman from Harrogate in 1989 . In 1990 she received an Honorary Doctor of Science ( Honorable DSc ) from the University of Ulster . In 1993 she received an honorary doctorate in law from Teesside University and in 2001 from the University of East Anglia (UEA). The Keele University awarded her an honorary doctorate in 1993 as a Doctor of Letters ( Hon DLitt ). She became an Honorable Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1981 and of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in 1996 .
