Ebun (born September 20, 2009 in Münster , Westphalia ) is a female white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) that was born in the Allwetterzoo Münster . Because it was cast off and almost killed by its mother, it was hand-raised by several orderlies . Ebun is known throughout Germany due to its supraregional media coverage. TV presenter Markus Lanz acts as the animal's godfather .

Life

Ebun was born on September 20, 2009 to the white rhinoceros Emmi (* October 22, 1990). The father is the rhinoceros bull Harry (born December 28, 1990). Shortly after the birth, the mother attacked her offspring. Emmi had already killed her cubs shortly after birth in 2000 and 2005. Instead of breast milk, Ebun received specially fortified foal milk.

Markus Lanz announced the name of the rhinoceros, Ebun , on October 8th in his eponymous program on ZDF . Previously, a vote on three suggestions for a name had taken place on the Internet. Ebun is a female African given name. It means "gift" and has its origins in the Yoruba people . This name was Markus Lanz's favorite. He explained on the program that an African animal should also have an African name. At the same time he took over the sponsorship for Ebun.

In October 2010, Ebun was relocated from Munster to Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire .

Ebun in the media

The birth of the rhinoceros cub and its repudiation by the mother met with a great response in the local and national media - on the Internet as well as in the press, radio and television.

In addition, the all-weather zoo operates an official baby rhino website, a fan page on the social network Facebook and an Ebun feed on the microblogging service Twitter .
