Ecgwald

Sussex in Anglo-Saxon times

Ecgwald (also Ecguald, Ecwald ) was subregulus (sub-king) of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Sussex in the 680s .

Around 682, Caedwalla , an exiled member of the Wessex royal family , attacked Sussex with his army. King Æthelwalh fell during the fighting and Sussex was sacked. Apparently, Caedwalla started Ecgwald, whose origin is unknown, as a subregulus in Sussex. Ecgwald is only known through two presumably fake charters . In these 683 and 685 he submissively ( mente devota ) approves gifts of land by Caedwalla to Bishop Wilfrid . The fight against the conquerors from Wessex continued Æthelwalhs Ealdormen Berthun and Andhun . They were able to drive out Caedwalla and together ruled over Sussex. Ecgwald's further life is unknown.
