Echinocactus platyacanthus is a species of plant in the genus Echinocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet platyacanthus means 'with broad spines' (Greek platys: broad). Spanish trivial names are "Biznaga de Dulce" and "Biznaga Gigante". Echinocactus platyacanthus is the largest species of ball cactus.

Echinocactus platyacanthus grows with almost spherical, broadly columnar to barrel-shaped, green to yellowish green, occasionally glaucoma shoots and reaches heights of 50 to 250 centimeters with diameters of 40 to 80 centimeters. There are 5 to 60 (and more) ribs . The shape and shape of the large, stiff, somewhat flattened, cross-furrowed, yellowish to reddish thorns , which later become blackish, depend on their age. The four somewhat curved central spines are often arranged crosswise and 5 to 10 centimeters long. The lowest central spine is often larger than the rest. The 8 to 10 radial spines are 3 to 4 inches long.
The numerous flowers appear from the yellow parting wool. They reach a diameter of 5 to 7 centimeters. The elongated, yellow fruits that are dry when ripe are covered with scales, wool and hair and have a persistent flower remnant.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
The range of Echinocactus platyacanthus stretches from southern to central Mexico .
The first description by Heinrich Friedrich Link and Christoph Friedrich Otto was published in 1827. Echinocactus ingens Zucc is a synonym among others . ex whistle. (1837).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT) ", d. H. listed as low risk.

The woolly parting hair was used as darning material and for weaving.
