Gymnocalycium saglionis is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the French cactus lover Joseph Saglio.

Gymnocalycium saglionis grows individually with cloudy green to blue-green, hemispherical to spherical, with age also short cylindrical shoots and reaches heights of 20 to 30 centimeters (rarely up to 80 centimeters) with diameters of 20 to 40 centimeters. The 15 to 30 straight or spiral ribs are somewhat to very clearly divided into rounded cusps. The yellowish-brown to reddish to black thorns turn gray with age and are 3 to 4 centimeters long. There are one to three straight central spines and ten to 15 (rarely from 8) radial spines slightly or strongly bent towards the shoot.

The very short-tube, urn-shaped to broadly funnel-shaped, white or pale pink flowers have a white throat. They reach a length of 3 to 3.5 centimeters and a diameter of 3 to 4.5 centimeters. The spherical, 2 to 4.5 centimeters long fruits are red or orange-red to greenish brown when ripe and contain a water-clear to greenish flesh .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Gymnocalycium saglionis is common in northern Argentina at altitudes of 500 to 2600 meters.

It was first described as Echinocactus saglionis in 1847 by François Cels . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1922 in the genus Gymnocalycium . The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Gymnocalycium saglionis subsp. saglionis
  • Gymnocalycium saglionis subsp. tilcarense (Backeb.) H.Till & W.Till

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
