Echinocereus stramineus is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet stramineus comes from Latin , means 'straw yellow' and refers to the thorns of the species.Common names are "Agosteña", "Porcupine Hedgehog Cactus", "Sanjuanera", "Spiny Strawberry Hedgehog" and "Strawberry Cactus".

Echinocereus stramineus has many shoots and forms large cushions with up to 500 shoots and diameters of over 1 meter. The cylindrical shoots gradually tapering towards their tip are up to 45 centimeters long and have a diameter of up to 8 centimeters. They are usually covered by the thorns. There are ten to seventeen ribs that are not well humped. The one to four strong, round to slightly flattened, straight to slightly curved, initially straw-colored central spines turn whitish later. They have lengths of 4 to 8.7 centimeters. The seven to 14 initially pink to yellowish and later whitish radial spines are up to 3 centimeters long.

The broad, funnel-shaped flowers are bright magenta in color and appear at a considerable distance from the shoot tips. They are 6 to 12.5 inches long and reach the same diameter. The spherical, very fleshy fruits, red when they are ripe, smell and taste like strawberries. They are covered with sloping glassy thorns.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus stramineus is found in the southwestern United States and central to central Mexico .

The first description as Cereus stramineus by George Engelmann was published in 1856. Francisco Seitz placed the species in the genus Echinocereus in 1870 . A nomenclature synonym is Echinocereus enneacanthus var. Stramineus (Engelm.) LDBenson (1969).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
