Echinococcus ortleppi is a parasitic tapeworm belonging to the genus Echinococcus . It was previously described as the genotype (G5) of Echinococcus granulosus . It mainly affects cattle , but this (sub) family is an unfavorable host for other Echinococcus species . So far, only one case of Echinococcus ortleppi in humans has been described, so it is regarded as not or only slightly pathogenic to humans. Its distribution extends over parts of Africa, Asia and Europe to South America. Only isolated cases of Echinococcus have been recorded in North America.
