The Taeniidae are a family of real tapeworms with a parasitic lifestyle. Most of the representatives are of medical importance because either their fin stages can cause fatal diseases in humans ( Echinococcus ssp. ) Or the adult tapeworms parasitize the intestines of humans.

All representatives have a Scolex with four distinct suction cups and a rostellum . Each tapeworm segment has a genital system with uterus , testicles and genital opening. The mature tapeworm limbs are longer than they are wide, have a thick, striped shell and contain around 200 eggs. About four to five such limbs are eliminated every day.

On the basis of the morphology of the tapeworm limbs - position of the genital openings, branching pattern of the uterus - the individual species can be reliably differentiated. In the case of eggs that have already been released in the intestine, a coproscopic examination cannot distinguish between the individual species. This can only be done on the basis of genetic tests in special laboratories.
