Echinopsis schreiteri forms dense groups or flat pads that consist of numerous shoots and reach a diameter of up to 30 centimeters. The spherical to elongated shoots reach a diameter of 1.5 to 3 centimeters. They have a large tap root . There are nine to 14  ribs . The areoles on them are not particularly close together. Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis schreiteri is distributed in the Argentine provinces of Tucumán and Catamarca at altitudes of 2500 to 3500 meters.

The first description as Lobivia schreiteri by Alberto Castellanos was published in 1930. Erich Werdermann placed the species in the genus Echinopsis in 1931 .

Other nomenclature synonyms are Lobivia saltensis var. Schreiteri (A.Cast.) Rausch (1976) and Echinopsis saltensis subsp. schreiteri (A. Cast.) M. Lowry (2003). In addition, the following taxa were synonymous with the species: Lobivia stilowiana Backeb. (1949), Lobivia saltensis var. Stilowiana (Backeb.) Rausch (1976), Lobivia schreiteri var.
