The Echo Bay Marine Provincial Park is a 1.6  ha large Provincial Park in the Canadian province of British Columbia and the smallest at the time Marine Park of provincial parks in British Columbia and one of the smallest parks in the entire park system in the province. The park is on the coast of Gilford Island in the Regional District of Mount Waddington . The region in which the park is located is included in the Great Bear Rainforest .

There is no land-based access to the park. In the immediate vicinity is the Broughton Archipelago Marine Provincial Park, the largest of the province's marine parks .

investment

The park is a Category II ( National Park ) protected area .

The park is located on the northwest coast of Gilford Island, on Echo Bay .

history

The Provincial Park was established on January 26, 1971, with a total area of 4.66  acres . Before the park was founded, there was a ranger station here.

Originally the area belonged to the hunting and fishing area of the Kwicksutaineuk .

Flora and fauna

Due to its small land area, the park cannot be assigned to any of the zones within the British Columbia ecosystem. However, surrounding land areas are included in the Coastal Western Hemlock Zone . Biogeoclimatic zones are characterized by a fundamentally identical climate and the same or very similar biological and geological conditions. This results in a very similar population of plants and animals in the respective zones.

Various whales such as the killer whale , the gray whale , the humpback whale or the common porpoise and the white-flanked porpoise can also be observed in the lake area of the park . There are also other rare or threatened species. Great blue herons can also be observed here .

Since different species of salmon spawn in the streams and rivers of the Canadian Coast Mountains , mainly in the Pacific Ranges , they can also be found in the park on the way there. Species such as the pink salmon can be found in the park, but their population has declined sharply (probably due to the numerous fish farms in the region).

activities

The park has no tourist infrastructure. The park is mainly used by sea kayakers .
