Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote in his work From my life. Fiction and truth about the gemstone bouquet already in its creation phase: “Everyone knew that Emperor Franz had a great affinity for jewels, especially colored stones. Lautensack had spent a considerable sum (and, as it was later found, greater than his property) on such gemstones, and began to form a bouquet of flowers from it, in which each stone should stand out favorably according to its shape and color and the whole should give a work of art. worth standing in an emperor's treasure vault. "

In fact, the 2.8 kilogram and 50 centimeter high flower bouquet was completed by the Viennese jeweler Michael Grosser around 1760. If you believe Goethe, however, the Frankfurt jeweler Johann Gottfried Lautensack did the preparatory work.

According to the stories, Maria Theresa had the gemstone bouquet placed in the minerals cabinet of her husband as a "little name day surprise" in 1764. The Empress supported her husband's passion for mineralogy and mining in order to promote the economic boom of the empire. This exhibit became the cornerstone of one of the most traditional and valuable collections of gemstones in Europe.
