Edgar Sergeyi Howhannisjan , Edgar Sergejewitsch Oganessjan ( Armenian Էդգար Սերգեյի Հովհաննիսյան ; born January 14, 1930 in Yerevan ; † December 28, 1998 ibid) was an Armenian composer .

After studying at the Komitas Conservatory in Yerevan , he went to Moscow, where he received lessons from his Armenian compatriot Aram Khachaturian . After his return to Armenia he became director of the Yerevan State Opera (1962–1968) and professor at the Conservatory (1958–1998).

In his works he made strong reference to Armenian history and its musical traditions. In the First Symphony (1957) he used melodies by the poet-composer Grigor Narekatsi from the 10th century. Based on Narekatsi's Book of Mourning , he created one of his main works, the oratorio Grigor Narekatsi .

He also created a variety of ballet compositions , including Marmar (1957), Antuni (1969), Masquerad (1981) and Jeanne d'Arc (1986). His Baroque Concerto for Violin and String Orchestra (1983) is also successful . He also composed the opera Die Reise nach Erzurum nach Pushkin (1987) and numerous film scores.
