The State Komitas Conservatory of Yerevan ( Armenian Երեւանի Կոմիտասի անվան պետական կոնսերվատորիա , transcription : Jerewani Komitassi anwan petakan konserwatoria , Russian name: Ереванская государственная консерватория имени Комитаса, transcription : Jerewanskaja Gossudarstwennaja Konserwatorija Imeni Komitasa ) is in the Armenian capital Yerevan located Conservatory and is as the most renowned musical training facility in Armenia . The conservatory is opposite the Armenian State Opera in Yerevan.

history

The institution was founded in 1921 by Romanos Melikjan , an Armenian pianist, composer and conductor who trained at the Moscow Conservatory , as the first Armenian Conservatory. It was named Komitas Vardapet after the founder of classical music in Armenia .

The folk artist Aram Chatschaturjan held a position here as a lecturer for music theory and harmony until about 1972 .

The current rector has been the conductor and professor Sona Howhannisjan since 2018.
