He took over the direction of a piano class at the conservatory in Yerevan and worked there and from 1956 in Moscow as a university teacher, composer and pianist. As a pianist, he has won various international music competitions. In 1952 he was elected to the board of the Composers' Union of the Armenian Socialist Soviet Republic and in 1962 was awarded the title "People's Artist of the Armenian SSR". Babajanjan was one of the leading musical personalities of the Armenian SSR. His compositional work reveals the stylistic influence of his compatriot Aram Khachaturian .

In 1950 one of Babajan's most famous works was composed, the Armenian Rhapsody for two pianos. In 1952 he wrote a piano trio, and in 1954 the poem rhapsody for orchestra. 1959 followed a sonata for violin and piano and the cello concerto dedicated to Mstislaw Rostropowitsch . He also composed other chamber music works as well as songs and film music. In 1981 a nocturne for piano and symphonic jazz ensemble was created. While he was initially oriented towards Armenian folk music, he opened up to musical innovations in the late 1950s and broke away from tonality . On March 9, 2001, the asteroid (9017) Babadzhanyan was named after him.
