Edgardo Nilson González (born September 30, 1936 in Colonia , † October 26, 2007 ) was a Uruguayan football player .

Known as El Diablo , the midfielder first played in his club-level career at Peñarol de Colonia and then moved to Liverpool Montevideo in 1958 , where he stayed until he returned. From 1961 to 1965 he was in the ranks also in Montevideo settled Peñarol . He and his team won the Copa Libertadores and the World Cup in 1961 . In 1961, 1962 and 1964 he won the Uruguayan championship. The Aurinegross also won the Campeonato Cuadrangular during González 'time with the squad in 1963 and the Copa de Honor and the Copa Competencia a year later . In a game on February 28, 1965 in Montevideo against Deportivo Galicia , the Venezuelan Vicente broke his right leg. This resulted in the end of his career. Pablo Forlán , who replaced him in that game, then became his permanent successor with the Aurinegros .
National team
González was a member of the Uruguayan national soccer team and completed 22 international matches from March 7, 1957 to January 3, 1965, in which he did not score a goal. In 1957 he was in the Uruguayan squad at the Campeonato Sudamericano 1957 and was used there six times. González also took part in the 1962 World Cup with Celeste . However, he was not used during the tournament.
After the career
González worked after his footballing career until his retirement in the city administration of Colonia . He passed away on October 26, 2007 as a result of an illness that worsened two months before he died. Posthumously the Junta Departamental and the City Council of Colonia intended to rename a tribune of the Campus Municipal Professor Alberto Suppici in his honor. There is now a football tournament named after him, organized in Colonia by the Edgardo "Diablo" González Circle of Friends .
