Edinample Castle is a castle on the south bank of Loch Earn near Balquhidder in the Scottish administrative division of Stirling .

history

"Black" Duncan Campbell ( Donnchadh Dubh ) from Glen Orchy had the residential tower with a Z-shaped floor plan built around an earlier building around 1584. It stands on land that Clan Campbell had acquired after their proscription campaign and subsequent ostracism of Clan MacGregor . "Black" Duncan allegedly pushed the builder off the roof, partly so he didn't have to pay him, partly because he forgot to build the parapets that were requested. The spirit of the builder is said to have been seen walking on the roof.

The castle was expanded in both the 18th and 20th centuries, but fell into disrepair in the early 1970s. Then it was renovated as a private residence. Historic Scotland has listed Edinample Castle as a Category A Historic Building.

architecture

The main block has three full floors and an attic. The round towers on the east and west corners have four full storeys. On the north side of the two towers, stair towers rise from the first floor in the inner corners with the main block. The two towers are the same height but slightly lower than the main block. The east tower is somewhat flattened on the southwest side; there is the entrance. All towers and tourelles have conical roofs.

The entrance leads to a small hall, from which a staircase with a platform leads to the first floor. From there, spiral stairs in the stair towers lead to the higher floors. On the first floor of the east tower there is a dungeon, which is accessible through an opening in the floor of the first floor and in which a stone bench and a stone basin are attached. On the ground floor, which has vaulted ceilings, are the kitchen with stove and two small side stairs to the first floor. The knight's hall is on the 1st floor. Like the smaller rooms on this floor, it has an open fireplace. Its ceiling is painted.
