Edison Masisi

Edison Setlhomo K. Masisi (born March 31, 1921 in Moshupa , Bechuanaland , today: Botswana ; † February 14, 2003 in Gaborone ) was a Botswana politician of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

Life

Masisi attended the Tiger Kloof Educational Institute in Vryburg , South Africa , where Quett Masire and Moutlakgola PK Nwako were among his fellow students. He then worked as a teacher in Mosopa between 1950 and 1964, where he was the school principal from 1957 to 1964. In 1964 he retired from school to run for a seat in the National Assembly for the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in the constituency of Mosopa . He suffered a defeat at first, but was elected a member of the National Assembly for the BDP in the constituency of Mosopa in the election in March 1965 and was a member of the National Assembly for 34 years until 1999. At the same time he became Vice Minister for Education, Labor and Social Services.

On October 23, 1969, Masisi replaced his old college friend Moutlakgola PK Nwako as Foreign Minister in the government of President Seretse Khama and held this position until he was replaced by Bakwana Kgosidintsi Kgari in March 1971. He was then Minister of Agriculture between 1972 and 1978 and most recently from 1978 until 1979 Minister of Health of Botswana.

In 1989 he became Vice Speaker of the National Assembly and held this position until 1993. After serving as Vice Minister for Finance and Development Planning in the cabinet of his fellow student, President Quett KJ Masire , between 1993 and 1994 , he held the post of Vice Speaker of the National Assembly again from 1994 until his retirement from politics in 1999.

His son Tshelang Masisi was also a politician until his death in 2013. He was elected to the National Assembly in 1999 in the Francistown constituency. His younger son Mokgweetsi Masisi has been a member of the National Assembly since 2009 and was appointed President of the Republic of Botswana on April 1, 2018.
