Edith + Eddie is an American documentary from the year 2017 by filmmaker Laura Checkoway and produced by Thomas Lee Wright . Cher was instrumental in making the film .

The film was nominated for the Best Documentary Short Film category at the 2018 Academy Awards.

background

According to Checkoway, the film was originally intended to be a heartwarming love story about America's oldest cross-cultural newlywed couple, aged 96 and 95, who got married after being together for ten years. However, the story took a turn when the happy couple were forcibly separated by a court order that forced Edith to live in Florida with their daughter.

When singer and entertainer Cher , who would later co-produce the film, saw a report on the news about the couple's plight, she was very moved and wanted to know how she could help. “I called my lawyer and said, 'Work your way in here and work on it,' because I didn't want this couple to get separated. They were too fabulous and I just didn't want to see anything bad happen to them. I wanted to have their house retrofitted so they could stay there, which in reality would have meant some repairs and a full downstairs bathroom. Then things started to change. Suddenly they had to renovate the entire house. It was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars now. And then, while we were making plans, one evening [Hill's guardian] came with the police and dragged them out of the house. "

She got in touch with the family and hired a lawyer to represent Edith and Rebecca Wright, one of their three daughters, in order to grant Edith's wish to stay at their home.

“I took care of my grandmothers, I took care of my mother. It's very expensive and thank God I can afford it. But my two grandmothers said to me, 'Never put me in a home.' Then my grandmother put my grandfather in a home; she made it look like it was nirvana. I went to visit him and I saw all these people who were only stored in this place. My grandfather didn't say a single word when I was there. I turned to him and said, 'I'll get you out of here. I don't care what the others say. ' And the only thing he said to me during the time I was there was: 'Sput yourself.' I got him out of there. I wouldn't put anyone in this home. I know people don't have the money, but our parents' storage just isn't right. "

Producer and director Checkoway said, “[Cher] wasn't looking for publicity; it was just something out of the generosity of what she is. She got involved behind the scenes, and then she and I made contact and kept that connection going. Pretty soon it became clear that there was a disagreement between Edith's daughters about what was best for their mother. We didn't know what literally came out of it in the end until it happened. Before I wanted to make the film, the guardianship system wasn't on my radar, so we learned that Edith's rights have been placed in the hands of someone appointed by the court who doesn't know her. And the problems that arise are shown in the film. Then I started researching and I couldn't understand how that could be. Many viewers leave the film asking themselves: How on earth did this happen? You are learning this is happening to seniors across the country. ” Washington Post reporter Judith Graham provided further details from the perspective of the other participants in the story.
