Edizioni Il Polifilo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Edizioni Il Polifilo is an Italian book publisher based in Milan .

The publishing house was founded in 1959 by the writer Alberto Vigevani (1918–1999), who had previously opened a book shop in Milan under the same name ( Libreria antiquaria Il Polifilo ) since 1941. The name of the publisher, in keeping with its bibliophile orientation, refers to the literary figure of Poliphilus, the protagonist of one of the most beautiful books of the Italian Renaissance, the novel with the enigmatic title Hypnerotomachia Poliphili ( Poliphilus's Dream Fight ), printed in Venice by Aldus Manutius in 1499 . The publishing program is characterized by publications on the topics of book studies , book illustration , art and architectural history and typography . In addition to Alberto Vigevani, his brother Enrico joined the publishing business, and since 1969 the management of the publishing house has been in the hands of his son Paolo. The publishing house has twice been awarded the Italian Prime Minister's Prize for Culture. To mark its thirtieth anniversary in 1989, the Biblioteca Trivulziana in Milan organized an exhibition at which all of the publisher's works were shown. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary, an exhibition was held in 2010 at Palazzo Sormani in Milan.
