Alberto Vigevani (born August 1, 1918 in Milan ; † February 23, 1999 ibid) was an Italian author , journalist and publisher .

Life

Vigevani came from a Jewish family from Emilia . Even as a young man he was interested in the humanities and theater. He enrolled at the Università Ca'Foscari in Venice , where he studied French literature. During this time he was engaged in the theater and wrote reviews. Enduring friendships began with Ernesto Treccani and Alberto Lattuada, among others .

In 1937 he took part with others in Naples in the fascist cultural festival, the Littorali della Cultura e dell'Arte , which was no longer possible for him in 1938 after the passage of the Italian race laws . In the same year he enrolled for his studies at the University of Grenoble . Through the mediation of his friends, he was able to publish reviews of literature and theater under the pseudonym Berto Vani for the magazine Corrente di Vita Giovenile founded by them . With Renzo Cantoni he opened a library in Milan, La Lampada , which very soon caused a cultural sensation and at the same time provided a refuge for opposition members and at the same time provided logistical support for their underground work. In 1941, after a failed attempt to emigrate to the USA , he founded the anti-quality bookstore Il Polifilo .

In 1943 Vigevani published his first novel Erba d'infanzia with the Parenti publishing house in Florence , where authors such as Eugenio Montale and Carlo Emilio Gadda also published. After the political changes in Italy in September 1943 and the increased repression against the Jews, he fled to Ticino in Switzerland with his wife and child . He edited the literary pages for the socialist daily Libera stampa for which other Italian emigrants such as Aldo Borlenghi of Gianfranco Contini also worked. In 1944 he published the novel Compagni di settembre in Lugano under the pseudonym Tullio Righi , which was published at the same time in Zurich by the Gutenberg Book Guild with the title Five Partisans in German.

In the years after Vigevani's return to Italy in 1945, two dozen volumes of prose and four volumes of poetry were published. In 1959 he re-founded the Edizioni Il Polifilo publishing house with his son Paolo , which he has been running since 1969. He has published articles in a number of Italian daily newspapers such as La Stampa , Corriere della Sera , Il Giornale , La Repubblica and Il Sole 24 Ore .

After Vigevani's death in 1999, his estate was given to the archives of the Università degli Studi di Milano .
