Rupnagar ( Punjabi : ਰੂਪਨਗਰ) is a city in the northwest Indian state of Punjab .
Rupnagar is the capital of the district of the same name and the administrative seat of the newly founded division of the same name . At the 2011 census, Rupnagar had around 56,000 inhabitants. The city is 40 km northwest of Chandigarh on the left bank of the Satluj . The national highway NH 21 runs from Chandigarh past Rupnagar to Mandi in Himachal Pradesh .
