Mandi ( Hindi मंडी Mandi ) is a city ( Municipal Council ) in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh .
It forms the administrative center of the district of the same name . In the 2011 census, the population was 26,422. Mandi is located at an altitude of 756 m in the Front Himalayas . The city is located on the left bank of the Beas at the confluence of the left tributary Suketi Khad .
The city was founded in 1527 as the capital of the princely state of Mandi .
The NH 21 trunk road connects Mandi with Bilaspur to the south . Upstream the highway leads into the Kullu valley to Manali . The NH 70 leads west from Mandi to the city of Hamirpur . The NH 20 leads northwest to the city of Dharmshala .
