Edmund Ballhaus

Edmund Ballhaus (born March 4, 1954 in Echte ) is a German cultural scientist , filmmaker and non-fiction author .

Life

Ballhaus received his doctorate in 1984. Dr. phil. The topic of his dissertation was the village development in the mirror of photography , which caused quite a stir. She has received two major prizes, the 1985 Kodak Photo Book Prize and the 1986 Pitre Marino International Prize . Ballhaus was a scientific advisor at the Institute for Scientific Film in Göttingen from 1986 to 1989 . During this time he made several films for university teaching in German-speaking countries. From 1989 to 2009 he worked as an academic advisor at the Department of Folklore at the University of Göttingen, where he initiated the focus on visual anthropology. In 1990 he founded the Society for Cultural Studies Film and was chairman of the film committee of the German Society for Folklore . He was also a member of the Folklore Commission for Lower Saxony and its chairman from 1998 to 2002. As a cultural studies filmmaker, he has produced numerous documentaries for universities, schools and museums as well as for various television stations. For his eleven-part documentary series about East Frisia (“East Frisia Saga”) he received the “East Frisian Indigenate” awarded by the East Frisian Landscape in 2011 , which corresponds to an East Frisian honorary citizenship. In the folklore dissertation “Cultural-scientific filming in transition. The film work of Edmund Ballhaus ”( ISBN 978-3-8391-0616-7 ), the author Peter Gürge analyzes all of Edmund Ballhaus’s films up to the year 2000.
