Edmund Blair Leighton (born September 21, 1853 in London , † September 1, 1922 there ) was an English painter who painted in the Pre-Raphaelite and Romantic styles. His pictures mostly depict scenes from the Middle Ages or from the Regency . His two most famous paintings are God be with you! ( God speed!, 1900) and Der Ritterschlag ( The Accolade , 1901).

Life

Leighton's parents were the late painter Charles Blair Leighton (1823–1855) and Caroline Boosey. After attending University College School in London, Edmund Leighton studied art at the Royal Academy of Arts . From 1878 to 1920 he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. In 1885 he married Katherine Nash, with whom he had a daughter and a son who also became a painter.
