Eduard Eckenstein

Eduard Eckenstein (born August 1, 1847 in Basel , † October 26, 1915 in Riehen ) was a Swiss entrepreneur and politician (FDP).

The son of the malt manufacturer and politician of the same name attended high school in Basel and then trained as a businessman. In 1863, Eckenstein inherited his father's malt factory. From 1890 to 1909 he was director of the resulting Gesellschaft für Malzfabrikation AG Basel. Politically, he joined the radical democrats. 1881–1909 he was a councilor in the canton of Basel-Stadt . In the parliamentary elections in 1887 he succeeded in entering the National Council , to which he belonged until 1893. Eckenstein held important positions in Basel and Switzerland's economic life: in 1897 he became President of the Commission for a National Bank. Two years later he was the driving force and board member of Basler Kantonalbank; from 1900 to 1909 he was President of the Bank Council. From 1906 to 1913 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Federal Railways .
