Johann Peter Eduard Ley (born October 30, 1841 in Fürth ; † January 16, 1925 there ) was a German entrepreneur. Ley was the owner of a wholesale and export business, commercial judge, chairman of the Fürth trade committee, chairman of the supervisory board of Grüner Bräu AG, royal Bavarian. Railway Councilor, Director of the Ludwig Railway .

Origin and family

Eduard Ley comes from the so-called “Crailsheimer Ley / Lay” family group. His father Georg Christian Daniel Ley moved from Crailsheim to Fürth in 1827.

Life

Johann Peter Eduard Ley was born on October 30, 1841 in Fürth, which at that time belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria. He was baptized Lutheran on November 21, 1841 and confirmed in 1855. He attended the trade and business school in Fürth and later trained as a businessman in his father's business. To supplement his knowledge and to deepen his language skills, he worked for several years in trading houses in Paris, London and New York.

After returning home, he became a partner in the trading company DANL founded by his father on July 4, 1836. LEY (wholesale and export of domestic industrial products) in the residential and commercial building at Koenigstrasse 276 (now: 133; destroyed February 22, 1945). In 1884/85 he added a third and fourth floor to this building because of the good business development and the resulting space problems. The iron construction with brick lining used was the first of its kind in Fürth. In addition, 2 rear buildings were built. On July 4, 1886, the company celebrated its 50th anniversary.

From 1858 he became a member of the Masonic lodge "To Truth and Friendship" in Fürth. He later became their later honorary master.

On October 13, 1870, he, Salomon L. Berolzheimer and Heinrich Hornschuch were appointed commercial judges (commercial assessor) at the Fürth commercial court by the Bavarian king. He exercised the judicial activity uninterruptedly until at least 1906.

On May 6, 1877, he married the factory owner's daughter Eva Elisabeth Maria Aurnhammer from Treuchtlingen (* July 1, 1854 in Treuchtlingen, † May 7, 1926 in Fürth).

Appointed to the Fürth district (trade) committee on June 27, 1888, he was chairman of the Fürth committee for 35 years from January 11, 1889, then honorary chairman. On January 4, 1909, he was married to Leopold Bendit, Hans Humbser, Anton Sahlmann, Leopold Ehrmann and Dr. Friedrich Morgenstern elected to the new trade committee.

In the royal Bayr. From August 18, 1889, until at least 1908, he was one of the representatives of the Central Franconian economy.

On January 23, 1889 he became director of the "Königlich Privilegirten Ludwigs-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft" corporation with headquarters in Nuremberg and Fürth, which he also led through the difficult and worrying years of the First World War and the post-war period.

On November 25, 1892, he was elected as a committee member of the "Association for the Elevation of River and Canal Shipping in Bavaria". On May 4, 1901, at the suggestion of the mayor, the Fürth section was founded, and he was appointed to the board.

Since the reorganization of the Grüner Brewery into “Grüner-Bräu AG”, he has been chairman of the supervisory board, a position that his son Adolf Daniel Ley took over after him.

Eduard Ley died on January 16, 1925 in Fürth.

He had five children with his wife Maria:

The oldest son Adolf Daniel Ley initially ran the DANL company. LEY continued as a partner with his brother Christian Friedrich, who then founded his own company "LEYLA" in Roth, which mainly produced mass figures.

Honors

  • On December 29, 1893, Eduard Ley was appointed to the Council of Commerce .
  • Eduard Ley was made Knight IV Class with the Crown of the Order of Merit of St. Michael by the Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold on March 10, 1901 .
