Eduard Probst (born July 29, 1906 in Zurich ; † December 8, 1970 ) was a Swiss architect , filmmaker and writer .

Life and work

He was the son of the architect Eugen Probst , who founded the Swiss Castle Association . He attended primary and secondary school in Zurich, then did an apprenticeship as a structural draftsman and attended trade schools in Zurich and Basel , where he made his first acquaintance with film. He completed his architecture studies at the ETH in Zurich. He then took on a few jobs for his father as a construction manager.

Between 1924 and 26 he was assistant reception manager at UFA in Berlin, where he shot the commercials “The Origin of the Confederation” and “Oh, My Home Country”. Between 1933 and 1936 he had a job at Terra Film in Berlin, where the films Wilhelm Tell , “To Strasbourg on Switzerland” and “The flag of the seven upright” were shot under his production management and artistic advice .

After that, he primarily made independent documentaries and took over the film production himself. He made the documentary films "Castles and Palaces of Switzerland", "Lebendige Schweiz", "Schweizer Landgemeinde" and "Wild im Schnee". With the documentary "Wild in the Snow" he gained worldwide renown. In 1938 he took over Probst-Film AG, which soon became one of the best-equipped film laboratories in Switzerland. Up until the Second World War he worked for and with his film laboratory, primarily for third-party productions and for the army film service . With the outbreak of the Second World War, the order situation fell and he was able to think of his own productions again. He shot the feature films Ski Holidays , Der Unlucky Bird and Mountain Guide Lorenz . In 1945 with the end of the Second World War and the failing European film industry, he had to liquidate his company due to a lack of external contracts. The federal political department procured him an Allied Military Permit, whereupon he helped rebuild German and Spanish film production. He was able to travel to many countries and pursue his passion as a photographer. Many of his photos have been published in various illustrated books. The two books “Swiss Castles and Palaces”, which he created as an author, are mostly provided with pictures of himself. As a result, he was commissioned to design the book Guide through the southern German castles and palaces , which appeared in 1968. The first two books in the book series Kurorte und Bäder in der Schweiz , the volume Leukerbad and Zurzach, were also designed by him. In addition, he works as a painter of oil, watercolor and pastel pictures.

He bequeathed his extensive film legacy to the Swiss Film Archive in Lausanne.
