Eduard von Alvensleben (born August 1, 1787 in Magdeburg ; † July 5, 1876 in Redekin ) was district administrator of the Jerichow II district and co-lord of the Erxleben II estate .

family

He came from the Low German noble family von Alvensleben and was the youngest son of the Prussian chamberlain Johann Friedrich von Alvensleben (1736–1819) and the former actress Friederike von Klinglin , divorced Doebbelin, (1749–1799). In 1808 he married Amalie von Stedern (1789-1816) from Emersleben . From this marriage five children were born, among them Udo Gebhard Ferdinand von Alvensleben (1814–1879). Amalie von Stedern died after giving birth to her fifth child at the age of 27. In his second marriage, he married Dorothee (Dorette) von Veltheim (1801–1879) from Destedt in 1818 and had five other children with her. The writer Ludwig von Alvensleben (1800–1868) was his nephew, a son of his older brother August.

Life

At the age of twelve he came to be trained in the cadet corps in Potsdam and enjoyed a strict upbringing there. During his five years as a cadet, he only received eight days' leave to visit his family in Magdeburg twice. During this time he became a sergeant and personal page of Prince Wilhelm, the later emperor. In 1805 he joined the Leib Carabinier Regiment in Havelberg as a standard junker. As such, he took part in the battle of Auerstedt in 1806 and the subsequent withdrawal of the Prussian army. In 1808 he was discharged from the army, married and took up residence on his parents' estate Redekin, which he bought from his father in 1811. In 1813 and 1815 he took part in the Wars of Liberation as a cavalry officer, was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class and dismissed as Rittmeister.

In 1819, after the death of his father, he was made chamberlain. In 1828 he was elected first district and state parliament deputy in his district of Jerichow II (Genthin) and in 1845 as district administrator with seat in Redekin, an office which he had previously administered several times and which he held until 1862. When he was elected, the rural nobility of the district preferred him to the young Otto von Bismarck . One of his first official acts was to appoint Bismarck as the dike captain of a section on the right bank of the Elbe. During the revolution of 1848, the revolting citizens were able - against his will - to move the official seat of the district administrator from Redekin to the district town of Genthin. After the death of Minister Count Albrecht von Alvensleben , he and his brother Ferdinand took over the succession on the Erxleben II estate , with management being taken over by his son Udo. In 1863 he was given the title of hereditary estate of the Principality of Halberstadt and in 1868 the title of "Excellence".
