history

At the end of the 1980s, the Federal Office for Industry, Commerce and Labor (BIGA, today SERI) was looking for a partner to manage a computer science department in the field of education. In 1989, a partnership agreement was signed between the Federal Office for Industry, Commerce and Labor (BIGA, now SERI) and the Film Institute (now the Swiss Media Institute for Education and Culture) to establish and manage the Swiss Specialized Agency for Information Technologies in Education (SFIB). The Swiss Conference of Cantonal Education Directors (EDK) became a further partner. In 2001, the federal government and the cantons created a new instrument with the Swiss Education Server (SBS). As a national information, learning and work platform, the SBS offered tools for integrating ICT into education and for quality development. Since January 1, 2017, educa.ch, the Swiss agency for ICT and education, has replaced both the SFIB and the SBS.
