Edvard Ellingsen (* 1855 in Fredrikstad ; † 1938 ) was a Norwegian engineer, educator, arachnologist and entomologist .

Life

Edvard Ellingsen was born in Fredrikstad . He was a graduate engineer, but later worked as a teacher at Kragerø Middle School . Johan T. Ruud , who was interested in land and freshwater snails (aquatic pulmonary snails; Basommatophora ) , also taught at the same school .

Ellingsen was one of the most important amateur zoologists of his time. In his early work he dealt with millipedes ( Myriapoda ), later he worked on harvestmen ( Opiliones ). His focus of interest then shifted to pseudoscorpions , and he became an internationally recognized specialist in this group of animals. He worked on finds from all over the world, including those from Italy, France, South Africa, Asia and South America.

In 1904 he was one of the founding members of the Norwegian Entomological Association ("Norsk Entomologisk forening").

Publications

Edvard Ellingsen has written numerous publications. The article on harvestmen "Norske Opiliones og deres geografiske utbredelse" (Norwegian harvestmen and their geographical distribution) was considered the fundamental work on this group of animals in Norway. In particular, however, his many publications on the subject of pseudoscorpions will remain significant.
