Musée de Tahiti et des Îles

The Musée de Tahiti et des Îles ( Tahitian : Te Fare Manaha ) is a museum of Polynesian antiquities, history and natural history founded in 1974 and based in Punaauia in Tahiti in French Polynesia .

The museum houses the Ethnology Museum , a ethnological collection, as Natural History Museum , a ornithological collection, plus a herbarium , a malacological and conchologische collection of molluscs and shells as well as the Museum of History and Art Museum and since 2004 a collection of historic photographs. In addition to information on the geology and geography of Tahiti, monumental stone statues of Tahiti, the Marquesas and Raivavae are on display, as well as weapons, ritual objects and handicrafts.

The collection includes more than 30,000 objects, including around 15,000 plants from French Polynesia, 11,500 ethnographic and 5,500 art objects.

In October 2010, the collection of the Société des Etudes Océaniennes (SEO) was integrated into the museum.

The director of the museum was Jean-Marc Pambrun (1953–2011) until his death .

cooperation

In December 2005, the museum entered into a cooperation with the Musée du quai Branly in Paris for joint exhibition projects.
