The Edward-Szymkowiak-Stadion ( Polish stadium in. Edwarda Szymkowiaka , formerly Hindenburg-Kampfbahn ) is a football stadium built in 1929 in the southern Polish city of Bytom . The Polonia Bytom club plays its games here. The stadium is named after the former national soccer goalkeeper Edward Szymkowiak (1932–1990), who played for Polonia Bytom for twelve years. The clubhouse , a sports hall and several training grounds are located near the stadium .

history

Before the Second World War , when Bytom ( German  Beuthen ) still belonged to Germany, the facility was named Hindenburg-Kampfbahn. On August 16, 1942, the German national soccer team played a friendly against Romania . The game ended with a clear 7-0 victory for the German team and three goals from Fritz Walter in front of 50,000 spectators. The football club Beuthen 09 played its home games in the Hindenburg arena until 1945.

In the 1960s, when Polonia Bytom was still a top team, it could seat around 60,000 spectators. For example, around 60,000 spectators came to a game in the 1964/65 International Football Cup against FC Schalke 04 (6-0). The stadium was very modern at the time and only a few years old. There was almost only standing room. In the early 1980s, Polonia Bytom got into a financial crisis because mines in the Upper Silesian coalfield that were financing Polonia closed. There was no money for new players or for the stadium. Polonia then rose to the third highest Polish league . The venue fell into disrepair and the club could not pay for repairs.

It was not until 2007, when Polonia rose again to the Ekstraklasa and had to meet the requirements of the PZPN football association , that the club invested in the stadium. The games of the first half of the 2007/08 season had to be played by Polonia in the Ruch Chorzów stadium. The system was given a floodlight system with an output of 1840 lux , the old main grandstand was renovated and turf heating was installed under the playing field . In 2008 a roof was installed over the stands and protects the fans from snow or rain during games.

In February 2013, the club announced that it would reduce the stadium's audience capacity to 2,304 seats because it could no longer afford enough stewards for the games financially .

On March 31, 2017, the city of Bytom issued a tender for the renovation of the entire sports complex around the stadium. The project is to be implemented by 2019 and, in addition to a stadium with three covered grandstands, also includes a multi-purpose sports hall with two ice rinks and a swimming pool. The total cost is estimated at 115 million zlotys .
