Edward Dębicki (born March 4, 1935 in Kałusz ) is a Polish Roma musician.

Life

Edward Dębicki's parents Franciszka Raczkowska and Władysław Krzyżanowski were traveling musicians from the Polish Roma . He grew up in western Ukraine, which was part of Poland until 1939. During the Second World War , the family was threatened on the one hand by the racist persecution by the German occupiers of Poland and on the other hand by the anti-Polish excesses of the Ukrainian nationalists .

After the end of the war the family settled in Silesia . He attended the music schools in Gorzów Wielkopolski and Zielona Góra in 1953 and founded the Kcham music group in 1955 , renamed Terno in the 1960s . Dębicki led the group with the accordion . He composed around two hundred songs.

In 1993 Dębicki published a volume of poems under the title Teł nango bolipen (Romani, Polish Pod gołym niebem ). In 2004 he wrote the autobiographical novel Totenvogel .

Honors

He is an honorary citizen of Gorzów Wielkopolski and received the Gloria Artis Medal for Cultural Merit in 2012 .
