Edward Farley (singer)

Edward Farley , actually Edward Hughes (* 1846 - March 10, 1916 in Canberra ) was an Australian opera singer (bass baritone).

Farley began his career as a chorister with the Carl Rosa Company . He first appeared as a soloist at the Royal Theater in Melbourne in 1870 . In 1871 he sang General Bumm in Jacques Offenbach's The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein . In the next few years he appeared with William Saurin Lysters opera troupe in numerous other roles, especially in French buffo operas. In 1875 he visited the USA, and in the following year he returned to Australia with Emely Soldene's operetta troupe .

He worked with Henry Bracy and performed with D 'Oyley Carte's English Opera Company in London . During his stay in England he also sang Escamillo in a Carmen performance by Emely Soldene. In Australia he was a member of Lysters Italian Opera Company and Montague - Turner English Opera Company . He toured India and East Africa with Emily Melville's Company and eventually settled as a singing teacher in Newcastle / New South Wales. He still appeared occasionally as an oratorio singer. He had his last public appearance in 1906 at the Theater Royal in a production of the Grand Duchess of Gerolstein by William Anderson .
