Edward Mansel, 3rd Baronet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir Edward Vaughan Mansel, 3rd Baronet (* after 1740 - † January 1788 ) was a British nobleman.

Edward Mansel came from a sideline of the Welsh Mansel family . He was the eldest son of Edward Mansel, 2nd Baronet and his second wife, who was believed to be Mary Bayley and whom his father had married in 1740. He was still a minor when his father died in 1754, making him heir to his possessions at Trimsaran in Carmarthenshire, South Wales, as well as the title of Baronet , of Trimsaran in the County of Carmarthen. In 1762 he leased the mining rights to his property in Stradey Park near Llanelli to the London merchant Chauncey Townsend, who had been a mining operator in South Wales since 1748 . With this he granted the first mining rights at Llanelli, but Townshend did not begin to build a shaft for a coal mine until 1765. Townsend died in 1770, and Mansel, who was judged by his contemporaries not to be particularly clever, was himself heavily in debt. The mine that was started was never actually operated due to lack of capital.

Mansel married Mary Shewen, a daughter of Joseph Shewen. With her he had a son:

  • Edward Joseph Shewen Mansel († 1798)

This became his legacy. However, he died unmarried and childless in 1798, with which the title expired.
