Edward Montagu-Granville-Stuart-Wortley, 1st Earl of Wharncliffe (born December 15, 1827 - May 13, 1899 ) was a British nobleman, officer and industrialist.

He was born Edward Stuart-Wortley, the eldest son of John Stuart-Wortley, 2nd Baron Wharncliffe , and his wife Georgina, daughter of Dudley Ryder, 1st Earl of Harrowby .

He joined the Grenadier Guards as an ensign in 1846 and retired from the British Army as a lieutenant in 1851 . When his father died in 1855, he inherited the title of Baron Wharncliffe . From 1859 to 1861 he served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st West Yorkshire Yeomanry and from 1861 as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd West Yorkshire Rifle Yolunteers . He was chairman of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway , which under his leadership was absorbed into the Great Central Railway , which he also chaired. On January 15, 1876, he was raised to Earl of Wharncliffe and Viscount Carlton . He changed his family name twice: from Stuart-Wortley to Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie in 1845 and finally to Montagu-Granville-Stuart-Wortley in 1880.

He married Susan Charlotte Lascelles, daughter of Henry Lascelles, 3rd Earl of Harewood , and his wife Louisa Thynne on July 4, 1855 . They had a son, John Henry, who died in January 1857 at the age of nine months. Due to a special inheritance regulation, his nephew and general heir Francis John Montagu-Stuart-Wortley also inherited his title of nobility.
