Edward Waterson
Edward Waterson († January 7, 1594 in Newcastle upon Tyne ) was an English Catholic priest and martyr . He served the hidden Catholics in England under the rule of Elizabeth I before he was arrested and executed in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1593. He was beatified by the Catholic Church in 1929 . His feast day is January 8th .
Life
Waterson was born in London and grew up an Anglican . In his youth he traveled to Turkey with English merchants. On his return in 1588 he stayed in Rome and converted to the Catholic Church with the help of Richard Smith . His stay in Rome from November 29th to December 11th 1588 is documented in the Pilgrim Book of the English College . Then Waterson came to Reims on January 24, 1589 . He received on 18 August 1590 tonsure and the minor orders , on September 21, 1591 the subdiaconate , on 24 February 1592 and the diaconate on 11 March 1592 ordination .
In the summer of 1592 he returned to England, where Catholics were severely restricted. Waterson served the hidden Catholic communities. Young priest Joseph Lambton , who was on the same ship, was arrested on landing, but Waterson fled. However, Waterson was arrested by the authorities in the summer of 1593, while Lambton was executed on July 31, 1592. The governor showed Waterson the quartered remains of Lambton to intimidate him, but Waterson perceived them as sacred relics . Waterson was detained until shortly after Christmas and hanged, gutted, and quartered as a traitor on January 7, 1594 . When he was tied to the stand on which he was to be dragged to the place of execution, the horse did not move, so Waterson was led upright. While in Newgate, he tried to escape by setting fire to his cell door.
