Robert Edwin McAlpine, Baron McAlpine of Moffat ( April 23, 1907 - January 7, 1990 ) was a British entrepreneur who became a life peer member of the House of Lords in 1980 .

Life

Origin and professional career

McAlpine was a grandson of Robert McAlpine , who in 1869 at the age of 22 founded what is now the engineering office and construction company Sir Robert McAlpine and Sons Ltd and who on July 2, 1918 , bestowed the hereditary title of Baronet , of Knott Park in the County of Surrey has been. His father, William Hepburn McAlpine, was his fifth child. After attending the Oundle School , a well-known boarding school in Oundle , he joined the family business in 1925 at the age of eighteen and became one of the partners in the 1950s.

In 1955 he became vice chairman of the board and in 1959 chairman of the board of the Nuclear Power Plant Co , for which the company Sir Robert McAlpine and Sons Ltd built seven nuclear power plants in Great Britain. In addition, McAlpine, who was beaten to a Knight Bachelor degree on January 1, 1963 and since then had the suffix "Sir", was also chairman of the board of British Nuclear Associates between 1963 and 1973 and of the London luxury hotel Dorchester Hotel from 1967 to 1977 .

House of Lords and Baronet

By a letters patent dated February 21, 1980, McAlpine was elevated to life peer status under the Life Peerages Act 1958 entitled Baron McAlpine of Moffat , of Medmenham in the County of Buckinghamshire. and was a member of the House of Lords until his death. After the death of his older brother Sir Thomas George Bishop McAlpine, 4th Baronet, who died childless, on April 5, 1983, McAlpine inherited the title of 5th Baronet , of Knott Park in the County of Surrey, as his successor .

His marriage to Ella Mary Gardner Garnett on December 8, 1930 resulted in four children. His eldest son, William McAlpine, succeeded him on his death as the 6th Baronet, while the second son, Alistair McAlpine , was a life peer entitled Baron McAlpine of West Green , of West Green in the County of Hampshire by letters patent dated February 2, 1984 , also became a member of the House of Lords.

His daughter Patricia Garnett McAlpine was married to Robin Sandbach Borwick from 1950 to 2003, son of Robert Geoffrey Borwick, 3rd Baron Borwick . This marriage had three children, including James Borwick , who is now the 5th Baron Borwick .

The youngest son David Malcolm McAlpine is also a director of Sir Robert McAlpine and Sons Ltd operates.
