In 2005 the seat of the new theater was relocated from Rastatt to Offenburg. The French seat of the cross-border binational theater became Strasbourg. The financial basis for the new independent theater was created with start-up funding from the EU Interreg program. Since 2008 - when Richard Doust left - Edzard Schoppmann has been the sole director of the theater. In the early years, the focus was on bilingual German-French productions, from 2008 the repertoire was expanded to include an intercultural theater, the international ensemble grew more and more beyond its German-French origins. In the course of this internationalization, Edzard Schoppmann worked as a director at Russian and Ukrainian theaters (State Academic Russian Drama Theater of Bashkortostan Republic, Troicki Theater Kremenchuk) from 2012 onwards. The unusual oval venue with 160 seats on the top floor of the European Forum on the Rhine is being built for BAAL novo by the architect and investor Jürgen Grossmann. In the first three years, the project will be largely co-financed with funds from the Excellence Fund from the State of Baden-Württemberg's Art Innovation Fund.

In addition to working with professional actors, an important part of Edzard Schoppmann's work is artistic work with amateur actors, refugees and migrants. For example, since 2014 he has developed several pieces with the newly founded BAAL novo - Citizens' Theater “Theater der Migranten” based on research and interviews, which deal with flight and migration.

Edzard Schoppmann designs and shapes the work of BAAL novo Theater Eurodistrict with a large number of his own pieces.
