Effeltrich (desert)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Effeltrich (also Effeltrach ) is a desert in the area of the Geiselwinder district of Füttersee in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen . The village was probably abandoned in the first half of the 14th century, the reasons are unclear.

Geographical location

The localization of the desert area proves difficult. In particular, the construction of the A 3 motorway in the 1960s changed the topography in what is now the Geiselwind community. Füttersee is located further to the north, and the settlement is likely to be taken by the motorway. South of the federal highway 3 lies the so-called Effelter Berg, whose name goes back to the settlement. In 1960 remains of the settlement's foundations were excavated.

history

Similar to the Affeltrach desert in the area of the city of Schweinfurt , the name Effeltrich or Effeltrach is probably derived from the Old High German word for apple tree, aphaltar . The ending -ach indicates a larger number. Effeltrich would then have been the settlement near the apple trees. The village was probably founded in pre-Christian times, when Germanic tribes advanced into Franconia .

Effeltrich was mentioned for the first time in 1040. Emperor Heinrich II restituted the “villam que dicitur Affaltrach” (Latin village, which is called Effeltrich) to the Benedictine monastery of Kitzingen . The nuns from Kitzingen probably also ruled the village until the 14th century. In 1316, however, knight Konrad Zolner gave the Cistercian Abbey of Ebrach some goods that had formerly belonged to the Kitzingen monastery.

Effeltrich was probably one of the larger settlements in the Steigerwald foothills . However, Effeltrich was referred to as "villa desolata" (destroyed village) as early as 1340. The deserted area reappeared at the beginning of the 15th century. The hallway of the desolate place was still being built on. In 1540, Count Wolfgang I. zu Castell held the bailiwick over several properties "zu Effelt", while the Zollners from Hallburg were responsible for the shaft drive. The "Effeltrach" desert was last mentioned in 1579.
