Egbert Braatz (born May 6, 1849 in Schirwindt in the Pillkallen district , East Prussia ; † August 16, 1942 in Königsberg (Prussia) ) was a German surgeon at the Königsberg University Surgical Clinic.

Life

Egbert Braatz was the son of a veterinarian Braatz from Riga . He spent his school days in Riga, studied in Königsberg with Karl Schönborn , in Dorpat and Leipzig, took his state examination here in 1878 and went to Riga for a year at the city hospital there. In 1880 he received his doctorate and in the same year passed his Russian state examination in Dorpat. From 1880 to 1889 he practiced in Riga (Scholz) and Libau / Kurland. He then took a course at the Hygiene Institute Berlin in order to be able to work for Vincenz Czerny in Heidelberg from 1990 to 1893 . In 1993 he settled as a surgeon in Königsberg, completed his habilitation here in 1896 and received the license to teach surgery at the Albertus University in Königsberg. In the first years of the 20th century he was appointed professor. During the First World War he was in charge of the outpost of a Königsberg fortress hospital from 1915 to 1919. Braatz was married to Adda, a nurse from the Baltic States. In his free time he did gymnastics. He died in the late summer of 1942 and was buried in the Königsberg cemetery on Cranzer Allee.

Scientific work

Braatz pioneered the introduction of asepsis in surgery. He published two monographs (see below) and 118 papers on bacteriology and hygiene in hospitals, with a special focus on surgery. In the " Association for Scientific Medicine " founded by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1850 , he gave lectures on popular science, e. B. On the aetiological role of microbes in carcinogenesis . And at the 91st meeting of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors in Koenigsberg in 1930 he spoke on the subject of the catgut question and attempts to improve aseptics . Other publications include practical experience in surgery, e.g. B. Inventions and construction instructions for new types of surgical instruments such as the colonoscope, forceps probes, operating tables, trephination drills, sterilization equipment. It was through this ingenuity to have developed practicable surgical instruments that he became known, which separated the specialty of proctology from surgery. The memory of him is especially preserved in Japan.
